Not only is Walter Bithell the gaffer on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, but is he also a long-time Litepanels customer. On set he utilized a variety of Litepanels products; in fact, they were featured over 150 times in his notes.
Bithell’s Essential Litepanels Kit
Bithell kept Litepanels products on-hand such as the 1x1 LS Bi-Color panels and the MiniPlus Daylight Spots and Floods, popularly known as "bricks." Overall, he employed their quick configuration and accuracy in regulating intensity and color.
Litepanels in Action
While Bithell used MiniPlus bricks inside the hovercrafts where tight spaces and extreme angles made it hard to accommodate other fixtures, the Litepanels 1×1 were used to imitate light from the monitor screen for close-ups.
He shared some insight on its practicality, “It’s very subtle, but very effective,” he said. “We ran them using remote cables with individual mini-controllers so we could adjust the intensity on the fly to give the illusion of a screen with broadcast content.”
Director of Photography Jo Willems also weighed in with his experience using Litepanels, “[They] are always a part of our kit now. They’re flexible, small and don’t use a lot of power. They’re very easy to bring in at a moment’s notice. If we were ready to roll and found it was too dark and needed a quick solution, we just grabbed Litepanels.”
